GET your processes and people qualified
Calling out a weld on a drawing may seem like a simple thing, but a lot of work is required before production welding can begin. First, a welding process must be selected along with a suitable filler metal. Welding parameters must be worked out to ensure a quality weld. After the welding procedure has been written, a procedure qualification must be performed to ensure that the welding procedure will produce a quality weld and will satisfy any applicable code requirements, such as ASME Section IX. Finally, welding personnel must also be qualified. These steps are covered in three basic documents:
- WPS — The Welding Procedure Specification is a document that describes how to make the weld and lists all important parameters.
- PQR — The Procedure Qualification Record is a test weld that qualifies the WPS.
- WPQ — The Welder Performance Qualification certifies individual welders to weld using a particular process and other parameters.
