make the right choice

An important part of any project is deciding what materials to use.  Unfortunately, this is not a trivial task since many factors must be taken into consideration including mechanical property requirements, environmental resistance, and processing  requirements.  In addition, the material must be readily available at a reasonable cost.  Choosing the wrong material can lead to all sorts of problems and may even lead to costly and embarrassing failures.

The material selection process typically proceeds in the following manner:

  • ANALYSIS — What will the materials be used for?   Formulate a list of material requirements.
  • INITIAL SELECTION — Based on the material requirements, develop a list of candidate materials.
  • EVALUATION — Evaluate the candidate materials to determine which is the best fit.  Lab and/or field testing may be required.
  • FINAL SELECTION — Evaluate test data and other criteria to select the optimum material for the  application.
